Anxiety

Understanding anxiety

Anxiety is something we all experience from time to time. It can be a natural response to situations that feel uncertain, stressful or difficult. But sometimes anxiety can become overwhelming or feel difficult to switch off. You may find yourself worrying constantly, feeling on edge or struggling to relax, even when there doesn't seem to be an obvious reason.

How anxiety can feel

Anxiety can affect both your mind and your body.

You might experience:

  • constant or difficult-to-control worrying

  • feeling restless or unable to relax

  • feeling overwhelmed or on edge

  • irritability

  • tiredness or difficulty concentrating

  • difficulty sleeping

  • muscle tension

  • panic or a racing heart

  • avoiding things because they make you anxious

You may know that your worries aren't always realistic, but still feel unable to stop them. Sometimes anxiety can also make everyday things feel much harder than they used to.

When anxiety is affecting your life

If anxiety is affecting your relationships, work, sleep, confidence or everyday life, you don't have to wait until it becomes unbearable before seeking support. You don't need to have a diagnosis to talk to a counsellor.

How counselling can help

Counselling can give you a safe space to talk about what you're experiencing without judgement.

Together, we can explore what may be contributing to your anxiety and help you develop a better understanding of your thoughts, feelings and responses. You don't have to know exactly what's wrong or what you need help with before you get in touch.
